I’ve been getting really into newsletters recently. Some of the things I enjoy about newsletters is that:
They’re not as long as books but they’re a bit longer and more thoughtful than social media posts
Unlike social media posts, I don’t get as distracted by what Khloe Kardashian’s body may or may not look like
In any case, I wanted to share a few newsletters that I’ve been enjoying recently. Plus they publish much more regularly than me 😅.
Musings Of a Wannabe African VC
Tech, VC, Finance, Investing
My cousin Ato’s newsletter which first got me hooked on substack. (LINK)
His blurb: Welcome to MWAVC, a newsletter about finance, investing, venture capital and all that jazz. My name is Ato (more about me here) and I try to write every single day. Most of it is stuff I find interesting that I’d like to share and hear your thoughts onGritCapital
Finance
In a world of finance bros, this is a great finance focused newsletter written by a finance sis. (LINK)
Her blurb: My name is Genevieve Roch-Decter, CFA. I am a former +$100M portfolio manager now managing my own money. I managed a small cap fund for 7 years which returned 13% CAGR net of fees to investors including the 2008 crash. It was ranked #1 fund in its category for 3 of the 7 years I ran it. With this newsletter you will get a finance edge in 5 minutes weekly. Join the +20k investors who are subscribed including: institutions, billionaires, advisors & regular people who are “Relentlessly Chasing ROI”.Chinese Characteristics
China, Tech
In a world of tech bros, I found tech sis! She writes about the Chinese tech ecosystem. This really is a must read because there’s so much we in the African tech ecosystem can learn from China. PS This newsletter has a paid version. I’m on the free version and love it. My husband got the paid version immediately I recommended it to him so I’m mooching of him for now (LINK)
Her blurb: The Chinese tech ecosystem has become a mirror world to the West tech world, innovating in divergent and parallel ways to their counterparts. English information on the state of Chinese tech is limited and refracted through narratives that do not deliver reality. This newsletter wants better for its readers. The Leonard Letter
Personal finance, investing
Lenny boy’s newsletter is great for general personal finance gist (LINK)
His blurb: (His blurb has way too much grammar sha so I just included a little bit) At age 26, I’ve retired from the corporate world, host a top 1% business and investing podcast called Millennial Investing & Real Estate 101 that has received over 1.7+ million downloads in just 15 months, am an active real estate investor, stock investor, and as of recently, a motocross racer again.
Process wise, I have an email box that I use exclusively for newsletter subscriptions. This practice helps me keeps my newsletters separate and also makes sure I don’t get distracted when I sit to read them. I go as far as using a separate app on my phone for this email box (Outlook vs. the standard iPhone Mail app which I use for my work and personal email).
Happy reading
